Showing my inexperience - what is up with this seedling??

Please bear with me - these are my very first seedlings, and I have just had about half a dozen open up their first tiny flowers. But this seedling seems so strange to me, and I’m wondering if it’s because I just don’t know what I am doing, or if it really is odd.

This baby opened up yesterday AM. The first photo shows it just after opening. The petals were lavender with darker purple areas. They opened up almost flat, and around the stamen you can see some very dark purple and white things. I thought maybe they would open up and be another layer of petals, but they stayed flush with the stamen. The bottom of the cup was white with a couple scalloped rings and pink splotches.

The second pic shows it from the back, so you can see the coloring better.

The third pic shows it in the evening. Throughout the day, the deeper purple overtook the lighter lavender, and became very blue-ish. This color held until today, at which point I did something stupid and almost killed the plant, and did cause the bloom to drop.

So…this thing looks so odd to me. The plants from this particular set of seeds have all been quite different from all my other seedlings, from the very beginning. Any insights or educational tidbits for me?? I would so appreciate it. Thank you : )

Lindsey,

I hate to tell you this but that is not a rose seedling. I’m not sure what you have there. You could look at some of the pictures of the seedlings of what other members have posted to get a an idea of what one would look like.

Paul

They should look something like these and a little later a little better. Not the best pictures or caught at the best time but you can get the idea.

Your mystery seedling almost (but something is not quite right) looks like Lithodora ‘Grace Ward’. But it is such an abreviated picture. Regardless, not even close to a rose. Start collecting OP hips from the backyard and the neighborhood, so you know they are the real thing. good luck on next yrs seedlings.

I had suspected that this wasn’t a rose. Luckily I sourced from different places so I do have some roses coming along. Thank you : )
