Seedlings through the first winter

Hello everyone,

Most of my seedlings were bred indoors through the winter/spring 2023/2024 and they are doing well through the summer outside in the garden. I have now a dosen of seedlings worth keeping, but I do not know how to handle them through the coming winter in Europe. Do they survive the cold months in the garden ? Or should I offer a lot of protection from the cold ? I am in zone 8a.

It would be a good test for them. If they are in the ground you can cover them.

Speaking very generally, I only hybridize with roses that are hardy in my zone, and so far, I have not encountered any offspring which are not likewise hardy. I don’t take any very special measures, except for mulching up a few inches over the roots, which I do for all roses in the garden.

Thank you very much, TimoNL. :+1:

Thank you Lee_hull,

The roses that I use are actually hardy in my zone, and it is nice to know that the ones I have bred will probably follow the parents hardiness. I will make sure that they are protected and mulched like my other roses, too. :+1:
