Seedling record keeping

Thanks George. Original is great, but remains to be seen whether anyone else will want to grow them in their garden.

Some crosses are done out of curiosity.

I only record the results of those things that worked. A number of other combination have been tried.

It would be fascinating to record the crosses attempted to see what trends could be gathered when seeing the result.

Two things: Jeff says he has been doing this for a yr now and “still has some lingering questions”, what, just some? I have been doing this for four yrs and each yr seems like I have more questions. I know I’m going to get it straight any yr now.

And, Robert, that is a lovely flower-is it very disease resistant/tolerant? If it is, with a little hype I could see people buying it. The flower has character and looks classy. How is the bush, aesthetically?

Robert, what sort of features does SALB1I892RBABDCAS have (or lack), that you think might make it less likely to sell as a garden rose?

Jackie, George, thanks for the input.

This seedling literally just flowered for the first time. I wish I had more information. As you know it takes a long time to properly evaluate seedlings.

It’s nice for a first blossom, but few make the grade. I’m not holding my breath.

Fortunately there are plenty more blooming for the first time now every day.

This is the fun part of hybridizing. In a few years I’ll be able to give you a better answer.

I misread–but that is a nice flower for a first bloom.

Robert said, “I’m definitely going where no Hulthemia derivative has gone before.”

That’s funny, Robert! - but absolutely true. There are so many directions to explore with these!

So have you decided on a new (shorter) code for it???!

Jim Sproul

There is a lot discussion on “coding” (naming) methods.

But how do you all keep! your records? paper/excel/database?

I just moved on to a little access database, after I learned how to do “self joins”. (Microsoft Access tips: Self Joins)

This allows me to put all plants in one table and choose mother and father from the same table.

I am very happy with it so far, since it can be easily adapted to my needs.

Of course it can not fully replace paper, when you go to the garden.

The coding of seedlings would be ultimatly only the ID number in the databes. Still they can be named according to any sytem I like.

“So have you decided on a new (shorter) code for it???!”

Jim, no, I haven’t. I’m culling harder than usual this season because of space constraints. I figure I’ll wait and see what I’ve got to keep before I decide how to assign them.

I’ll probably just assign a number that includes the year, seedling number etc. It’s boring but practical.

The nice thing is I can post them to HMF when I’m ready and study pedigrees.
