Has anyone tried this, was talking to Gemini this morning and it said it was something you could try to help germination of thicker shelled seeds. Surely the risk of damage the radicle is high… or have any of you tried this?
I tried it a few years ago, but unfortunately didn’t get any significant results.
Besides the vita mix, l tried a spent brass polishing machine used in reloading, never saw meaningful results (0). But it used “corn waste” as a media.
Sveda ( explorer program ) tried a few methods ( including mild acid bath) and put out a paper. She had little enthusiasm for abrading from her results. If l find it l’ll put the table in thread.
There is interesting paper discussions by her also about her government financed ( tax dollars) germination testing of secondary dormancy that led to ambient stratification - that turned into a fungal mess for me. But l not a scientist so probably did it wrong.
I swear by mice processing but not willing to take a indoor chance on bench scale testing.
I haven’t tried it on roses, but I scarify lots of other types of seeds, with excellent results. I nick the seed (carefully) with a sharp knife. I do this before I stratify the seeds, so they can absorb water. It makes night and day difference for seeds that are really hard.
