Not sure if many of you grow this one but I’m curious to know if any one has used this variety in breeding?

I have grown this variety for about 5 years and it impresses me more and more each year. The first thing that it has is vigor. I cannot contain this one no matter how I try. The second thing I like about it is the rich fragrance - it does not over power and is very pleasing. The rebloom is also pretty good - for a climber. The canes are very pliable and it has a graceful habit (not stiff like Altissimo).

Its two faults (as I see it) are disease resistance which is better than most but I think it could be a little better (it gets some BS for me but always seems to outgrow it) and it is a little tender for my area so I have to collapse it to the ground to save the canes from winter damage. I have, however, let winter kill all but the base the first few years I had it and it did not seem to phase it one bit. It took only 2 years for it to establish itself.

The other thing I noticed about it is that it has light to moderate thorns in the Spring but virtually no thorns on its Summer or Autumn growth.

The parentage is unknown according to hmf so who knows what it has in it (maybe Guin

You can be almost certain that ‘Guinee’ played a role in its breeding, given the breeder and time period.

Great color on that one.

The color is another reason for me to consider using it. It seems to be a lot more stable than most other reds of that era.

I also grow Guinee and I have no plans at this time to use it. The two are somewhat similar but I think Senegal is much, much better. It would be interesting to try a few crosses where Senegal and Guinee are switched out for each other.

I wonder how many generations it would take to get Senegal tamed a bit using miniatures. I’m still not sure how the whole miniature gene works. Am I correct in assuming that the miniature gene is dominate and you only would need one out of the four (assuming tetraploid X tetraploid). Or do you need more in place than that?

It seems as if it should require only one. Dee Bennett raised many minis from mini X Futura and several have raised a good number of them using mini X Gene Boerner. Ralph raised many from mini X Gold Badge and his 0-47-19 when crossed with mini resulted in about 25% dwarf, repeat flowering plants. Torch of Liberty dwarfed Fedtschenkoana to about three feet in one generation. Kim
