rugosa-roses-whats-not-to-love

Pavement series examples, especially Rotesmeer, have been in gardens for +15 years - don’t remember shovelling one out. A favourite and totally consistent year in and year out.

Definitely not completely cane hardy in my garden, but stronger than (The) Hunter (21 years).

Don’t do crossings with rugosas due to susceptibility to anemia and unnatural foreign chemicals burning of leaves.

I can’t grow much of the modern hybrids so I use Rosa rugosa. The biggest issue is the lack of colours (Topaz Jewel does not count).
I also love the Pavement series especially ‘White Pavement’.

What have you grown besides White Pavement? I have Snow Pavement and Blanc Double de Coubert en route. I have my great grandmother’s Hansa, which is older than me, and has survived neglect, -20 temps on the coast with no protection, sometimes seeing winter winds over 70 mph.

I have a beautiful repeat flowering seedling out of Micrugosa that is nicely fertile. I produces seedlings that have rugosa traits and seedlings that have roxburghii traits. Hope to see blooms this spring.
