While driving, I’d noticed a Rugosa hybrid by the roadside a few times; its dark flowers really caught my eye. A few days ago, I pulled over to take a closer look. The flowers are small at first and tightly wedged between the pinnate leaves, so that some of the petals do not unfold properly. It opens in a velvety dark red, which then turns to a purplish red. The flower fullly opened is about 8 cm in diameter, semi-double, and has a very intense fragrance. A few buds were still visible, also a few hips were present.
The research I’ve done hasn’t turned up anything clear. However, I think it’s possible that this is the Rugosa hybrid ‘Magnifica’. What do you think?
