Rosa sericea ‘Pteracantha’

Has anyone tried to breed roses with the winged thorns?

No , l do not have the Red Winged rose, but R. Primula.

If not related near the dawn of red wing photosynthesis … maybe pretty close. Except flowers single yellow and red wings separated by gap.

Anyways glad to read ur post and went and looked. Rarely has hips but 5 this year. Will be trying opees.

Good luck.

As a side note, one of the first to bloom. Bloom was adequate in number this year. Not much flying around at that time of the year. All blooms that went hip were near the top and last flowers to bloom.

The winged thorns of r. Sericea Pteracantha are so beautiful to me, but sadly I don’t have room for it in my garden.
I see on HMF that it has been used successfully as a seed parent in recent breeding efforts with r. Ecae , Haspina Rosella and Golden Chersonese. At least one of the seedlings seems to have inherited the wings.
I hope more breeding will be done with it, it could lead to some really cool looking roses!
