I was at a function at Castle Hex near Liege and I was initroduced to these two gentlemen. The conversation we had was amazing especially with Martyn Rix as we walked around the castles grounds and their vast rose garden.
Aren’t they delightful? I met them back about 1992/93 when they were here filming The Quest for the Rose, the BBC book and documentary they created. I got to host them photographing my old Newhall garden, then had several dinners together with the Huntington Volunteer Group, and shooting all over the grounds there. Filming the final scene “garden party” for the documentary in a friend’s rose garden in Torrance, CA with her and Roger in a hot tub strewn with rose petals, sipping wine, in NOVEMBER with the palms gently swaying in the breeze in the back ground was fun! Roger gave the dinner speech at a Huntington Old Rose Symposium a few years later and brought down the house with his tales about Prince Charles inviting him to “frolic” in the Royal Woods, collecting mushrooms for lunch. Roger is of the world’s foremost fungi experts. His fungi books are great. http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/books/ I last saw them a few years ago at their Great Rosarians of the World presentation here.
