R. primula offspring

In 2014 I planted 6 OP seeds from R. primula (Pickering). Five germinated. All with fragrant foliage. In 2016, 2 of them flowered, both white, this year 2 more flowered, both yellow. I have named both of the white ones after my dogs, thus Gizi’s Rose and Zephyr’s Rose. Finally found a spot in the garden for both this March and both are taking off. Gizi’s Rose produced dozens and dozens of flowers and has particularly fragrant foliage. I had a hard time telling what kind and how much scent the flowers had due the the foliage scent. Zephyr’s Rose also has fragrant foliage, just not to the same extent. ZR had maybe a couple dozen flowers. Almost every flower on Gizi’s Rose is producing a hip–pretty much the same for Zephyr’s Rose. R. primula has also been a heavy setter of hips (hard to harvest though as the wild creatures like to eat them before I can collect them). Oddly enough, this year R. primula (from Pickering in 2011) for the first time did not bloom at all for me, yet the offspring bloomed well.

It was similar here, too, Melissa. I had only five or six flowers on my Pickering Primula, yet the seedling Xanthina had several more and 1-72-1Hugonis and its selfs flowered heavily (and are still flowering). The crosses between 1-72-1Hugonis and moderns didn’t flower as heavily as last year, but they appear to demand more heat to flower than those closer to the species. Congratulations!
