I am writing to ask opinions on this plant. Originally I had planted a rosa gallica officinalis on a rootstock from David austin roses next to the mailbox. The whole plant died, I expect from the neighbor using roundup to keep her lawn pristine. I ripped the whole thing out of the ground. It was in a raised mini-bed that I completely removed, then last year this thing popped up next to the mailbox. I wondered if maybe it was from the rootstock sending up something from left over roots and this is what it is? I hear Dr. Huey is a common rootstock used by DA, but looking at pictures, this doesn’t look perfectly like a dr. Huey. I also wouldn’t discount the possibility of some rogue rose hips getting turned into the soil when I ripped up the plant. Thoughts?
99% sure that is Dr Phooey, yes.
As someone who doesn’t live in the US. It’s actually quite a nice flower
I agree. Back in the day when transitioning to roses that belong here, l had a few pop up and bloom after tender roses moved on. Problem was canes not hardy and dies back nearly to ground in my garden.
Left one for at least 3-4 years in hopes would bloom again - as tender and once bloomer. Never did again.
Digging it out was a major toil as it was very aggressive grower that produced terrific deep tri-anchor roots (hence rootstock role).
Eventually resorted to Tiger Saw after breaking a shovel handle. l planted deep in those days of yore to keep grafted bud below the nominal frost line depth.
However my growing version usually grew multiple canes (long and in one growing season). But still cast my vote for the Doc based on bloom-pity because is an attractive bloom color.
Could have sprouted from a seed from a rose hip. The seed grown roses rarely look exactly like the parent plant. That could have been what happened here.
