Hello everyone!
I’m wondering if you have any experience with breeding with ‘Ralph Moore’ and ‘Pride of Oakland’ roses? To clarify, I’m referring to this rose as ‘Ralph Moore’: 'Ralph Moore ™' Rose
Thanks!

Welcome! No, I’ve not bred with the rose “Ralph Moore”. I saw it at Sequoia Nursery before it was introduced as it was given to Mr. Moore prior to its release for him to observe and provide his permission. The bloom is overly large for the plant. I actually commented that to Mr. Moore and he agreed. I asked why he gave his permission for it to bear his name when it wasn’t something he would have released. His response was, sometimes you have to do things to be “gracious”. I never gave the plant further consideration. As for Pride of Oakland, it’s a very good rose. My three offspring from it are its only listed results on Help Me Find-Roses. I’ve always felt its breeding was inspired.
Hi roseseek,
Thank you for that wonderful story about Ralph Moore rose! I’m more inspired to work with it now. Large flower relative to its stature is an asset. From HMF, it appears to be a solid rose all around as well.
I see that you only used Pride of Oakland as a pollen rose. Is it sterile for seed?
You’re welcome. I never tried Pride of Oakland for seed. No real reason why I didn’t, I just didn’t You SHOULD try it. Perhaps it will work well? I guess if you want masses of color in small spaces, overly large flowers for the plant structure may seem desirable but when it was introduced, it was out of proportion and definitely to Mr. Moore’s taste.
