Hi,
I’m wondering if a potential novice like myself would be welcome to ask and learn here? I’ve already begun learning by reading old posts - thank you very much!
I promise I will try very hard not to ask annoyingly simple questions, etc.
Am I required to join the association first?
Thanks
Welcome sandandsun! You’re forgetting we’re all novices at everything once, and many of us remain novices at many things forever. A new perspective is always beneficial. Thank you for reading older posts. It gives you background so you hit the ground running and allows you to jump right in. Enjoy! Kim
Hi Sandandsun! I’m a total novice too but this is the place to learn! And everyone has been most patient and helpful too. Welcome!
Thank you Kim & Seil.
My first question then is a question to avoid questions - just as I’m reading older posts here, I’ve also researched as best I can stuff from the web.
I have Jim Sproul’s Rose Hybridizing, Paul Barden Roses, Pushing the Rose Envelope (which led to Hybridizing Roses - by Arno Schlick) all as favorites. Also Paul Zimmerman’s Roses are Plants Too and HMF’s ezine. I mention Zimmerman because his effort to create a test garden that would include home hybridizers has pushed my motivation to Postulant from stuck in the mud.
I’ve found a little on Tuscon’s Ms. Singer’s work.
Are there other go here first (or also) web places to learn to which you might point me?
Thanks
Welcome Sandandsun. You will find many articles here on the RHA forum home page. Check out Hybridizing-the next step, and then try each of the other headings. Some are a little ‘broken linked’ but you will find a lot. One particular place to try is at the site of The Bulb’nRose, esp. rose hybridizing. Many articles, really interesting, give you reading until your own seedlings are at least blooming. And of course, try the really good source of doing a search on any 2-3 word subject to see what has been already shared about many subjects, here on RHA. That should keep you busy for at least a few days!

Welcome sandandsun,
No of course you don’t have to join first, however if you ever decide to join, one of the extra benefits you may not know about is that you then get a fantastic quarterly newsletter written by passionate members of this Association. It is always great reading. Also, the fee for joining is ridiculously cheap.
Sandandsun welcome.
You are not required to join the RHA, but if you find this is something you really enjoy I would highly recommend it.
Since you already have some blogs I would also recommend these sites. The first one helps looking up parentage and such. the next is another forum that might be helpful. the rest are sights that any hybridizer will find are true gems of knowledge.

And do not worry about asking stupid questions. I probably have asked stupider question than anybody in the past and there is bound to be more coming in the future. Good luck.
Hi Sandandsun,
Welcome! This is a hobby like no other - and there is always something new to learn!
You may want to purchase back issues of the RHA newsletters (get a Christmas present for yourself). There is a great CD that has them all (see link below).

Jackie, thank you! It looks like your leads will keep me busy for a few months or more so I appreciate your dry wit.
Thank you very much - they look interesting.
Thank you George, Adam, and Jim.
