Peggy Martin Rose

Has anyone used Peggy Martin Rose for hybridizing? It was featured in the latest ARS magazine. It looks really good. It may not be cold hardy to zone 5. There are conflicting answers about that. I like that it is thornless.

It definitely has both multiflora and wichurana traits, with a heavier touch of multiflora. I would not be surprised if it reallyw as Climbing China Doll. It is definitely not Climbing Pinkie. I suppose it would be worth someone’s time, but I do imagine they’d have to weed out mildewed and once-blooming seedlings.

I think it is amazing (and not in a good way) that the rose was collected from some woman’s garden after Katrina and renamed, as if it was some new rose deposited along with the silt. The rose is undoubtedly a known variety; its just a matter of time before someone IDs it. Very unfortunate when such things happen. I’m sure we will have people sharing “Jefferson Rose” for generations under that false name.

Yeah, it’d be really disturbing to have created a rose, then die, then someone renames your creative work. I’m gonna install lasers on my tomb stone, lol.

I had millions of seeds from it last year and germinated a lot and threw away a lot of seeds. I kept one plant that looks like it is probably a cross with one of my teas which Peggy was on top of my tea bed. I will see how big it gets, it is a repeat bloomer and blooms a lot and lasts a long time on the bush. I have not tried to do any polinations with it.

When I first saw it a few years ago, I thought it looked like Renae.
