OP 0-47-19 seedlings

Has anyone germinated OP 0-47-19 seeds and got any remontant seedlings? I was checking mine this morning and noticed that one, only a few weeks old, has a flower bud.

I dont know but I was thinking about Paul’s problem earlier this year (ie search for a repeating, non-house eating, non-pink/magenta/white diploid to mix with 0-47-19). I think he specifically was looking for red. To me, it seems like it would take multiple combination to get anywhere because of the lack of choices. I recalled this issue when looking at both Chevy Chase and Happy earlier this year. Chevy Chase has awesome clarity in its color. Its foliage is also very aesthetic. Too bad it is a rambler. Happy is a nice red polyantha that doesnt get mildew when someone sneezes (like, for example, Mother’s Day). These two would be a pretty awesome combination. If it worked, it could be a good stud rose for a lot of ideas.

Also, this is slightly off subject, but a thread on Rosarian’s Corner reminded me that I’d love to see a climbing micromini. For example, Red Cascade x Climbing Happy. That’d be funky lol.

btw, has anyone ever tried using Coral Meidiland? It has several doses of 0-47-19 in it and is many line breeds of Rosa wichurana into one rose. It has a nice salmon tone and nice looking sprays but no idea as to how healthy it is. HFM says it sets hips. This would be a nice rose to cross with Coral Drift – maybe.

I can understand why it could be remontant given ‘Floradora’ is… it is probably carrying remontancy in there. I just don’t remember anyone saying whether they had ever got anything remontant from 0-47-19 by selfing it. It looks like it wants to climb already though if it is remontant I would imagine it won’t be quite so rampant.

The pollen parent could be anything.

Alos, repeaters directly from the synstylae species are not unheard of. It doesnt seem to take much – reduction in growth seems to aid this.

Found the information I was looking for (see link)… also states the selfing ability…

I’m sure Paul has good reason to suspect his seedling is a self.

Most of the time with OP seed we never know for sure.

When I used to grow more OP seed there were always surprises.

Yes, open pollinated seed from 0-47-19 will produce a small percentage or repeaters. (around 10-15%) This is no mystery, as ‘Floradora’ is one of its parents. Statistically, 0-47-19 should produce about 25% repeaters, but it is always something less than that. I believe it is because another 1-20% of them is actually a repeater which doesn’t manifest the trait until year two. Unfortunately, this means if you cull all non-repeaters in year one, you are guaranteed to discard some seedlings that will become remontant in year two.

How do I know this? The seedling that became ‘Mel’s Heritage’ (0-47-19 X ‘Crepuscule’) did not flower in year one. I saved it only because it had clean foliage and superior vigor. It was originally kept to try out as a rootstock! Then, in year two it bloomed, and then it bloomed again in July…and in August, and September. So, clearly it had to undergo some changes that only triggered the remontancy genes once it was over a year old. I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that the percentage of repeat bloomers from a selfing of 0-47-19 was much closer to the 25% that, statistically, ought to be if you include the ones that start to repeat in year two.

FWIW,

Paul

So, about those seedlings that decide to flower the first time in their second year of life and which also become repeat flowering roses…do these tend to be climbers, or not necessarily?
