I’ve been so intrested in species lately, and thought how intresting that they have introduced many traits into the rose kingdom even though they do not express the trait itself. My examples: the dark unfading reds and orange reds from R. roxburghii and R. rugosa, thornlessness from R. bracteata, and handpainted roses from R. spinosissima altaica. But why is it that these species pass on these traits when they do not express it? Could there possibly be unknown traits that are waiting to be found in other species roses? Perhaps that there is an overlooked very simple species rose with small pink flowers that may have a gene for blue pigmentation. Who knows…
