My name is Richard Cummings, out of the Ann Arbor area in Michigan, and I am a new member to the RHA. I have 88 different Rose cultivars but have never hybridized (VERY GREEN)!
I look forward to a very successful and rewarding experience with my new hobby via the Association.
As the introduction to the ‘RHA BEGINNERS’ publication states, “As a beginner, my goal was (is) to have fun and enjoy the thrills of hybridizing”.
Let me be the first to welcome you as a member of the RHA. You will find that our members are very helpful and will go out of their way to assist a beginner in this wonderful hobby. The forum is a excellent place to ask questions, and you will find advice coming from all over the world as we have members in a dozen or so countries! The RHA has a couple of books that I would recommend that you get and read over the winter so you are ready to give it a go next spring. One of them is what we refer to as the blue book, but is titled, “Rose Hybridizing for Beginners”, and the other is titled “Rose Hybridizing - The Next Step”. You can order them from Larry Peterson right here on the website.
Welcome to RHA Richard, I’m Patrick from Louisiana and have been hybridizing for about 7 years so I consider myself a newbie also. You will love it here as the more experienced hybridizers are so willing to share their knowledge and even plants. I have to say I’m glad I’m spending the Winter here instead of where you are although if one is into Winter sports its where you need to be. Have a good one
I joined RHA a the begining of this year. I have found RHA forum members to be very willing to share their rose breeeding experiences, making it even more fun!
You are beginning a hobby like no other that is fascinating, addicting and rewarding all at the same time. The booklets that John mentioned are a great place to start. You can also use the search function on this forum to find additional information.
Welcome Richard. I’ve been here for about two years. There are lots of helpful folks here that are more than willing to offer advice of all aspects of raising roses. Just be prepared to learn a ton of stuff.
Hey Richard. I consider myself a newbie when it comes to breeding roses. I been doing this for something like four years. Have not had a lot of success but each year it gets a little better. Be prepared to meet some of the nicest most helpful people on the planet. Don’t be afraid to ask question the members are more than willing to answer question one has. But any way welcome and I look forward to getting to know you.
Welcome aboard Richard. I started this fun adventure 3 yrs ago in anticipation of having something to keep me out of mischief when I retire next year. Then I will get serious! It has taken me about that long to really get down basics and have a few successes(in my mind’s eye). And it really is about as simple or as complex as you are inclined to let it be. Good luck, and start looking for more space that you are going to start devoting to more roses.
I hope you find participation in this group to be rewarding and enlightening. I hope you will feel free to ask any and all questions that come to mind. We’re very free with information here
I don’t post much because I am near the bottom of the learning curve. Have been on a lot of forums and I will say this is about the nicest, most generous, warmest group of people you will find. Welcome and enjoy; you will learn a lot and in time give a lot in return.
