Anyone know anything about “Bull’s Eye?” Here’s what info the seller lists:

Quite attractive, fragrant, vigorous, and black spot resistant? Sounds very nice, the unanswered question is–is it fertile?

If that was the one in the AARS trials in the past 2 years, it mildews.

“Peter made crosses with Blue for You and a sister seedling and almost immediately came up with Pejamore which won a high award in The Hague rose trials and is currently in the A.A.R.S trials. This is a floribunda which is very free flowering, but we found it rather prone to mildew and so did not market it. A year later he came up with Pejbigeye, which as the the code suggests has a very large eye. The eye is purple and the inner petal is a creamy shade, so there is a good contrast between eye and the rest of the petal. It has the added bonus of a very good fragrance. It is a short grower so I suppose the pot people will like it. We have put it on the market as Eyes for You.”

This sounds like the one that was in the trials, and is not the same apparently? See link.

Yep – that’s the one. PEJamore is the registered name of Bull’s Eye, according to the IRAR site. So I guess this rose is a big mildewer. So they advertise great black spot resistance. Figures.

I WISH someone would market Eyes for You on this side of the pond.

So is it AARS test rose 09R408 that is now in commerce as Bull’s Eye?

It’s happened for years Don. 89R107 was an orange and yellow striped McGredy mini in the AARS trials. Simultaneously, it was commercially available here as Pandemonium. It was on sale here officially for the last year of its trial. Kim

This is all very great to know about.

I have just sown some PEJAMbigeye XOP seed, it will be interesting to see if/what germinates.

Yes, ‘Bull’s Eye’ is one of the early Peter James hybrids that was really quite nice, but does get some mildew. It has a beautiful spring display. It is among many of the Hulthemias though that fade significantly in the warmer nights of summer. Good heat stability will be something to watch for when breeding with any of these (including the Eyeconics).

Hi George, I have not seen or grown PEJAMbigeye in person, but it sure looks like a winner. I wish you the best on good germination!

Hi Jim,

Two members of the HMF community who grow PEJAMbigeye (I think one source was from Spain??, and one was from Russia??) had commented many months ago to me that their established PEJAMbigeye specimens did not set OP hips, in their respective climates.

Based on those reports, I was rather surprised to have received OP seed form PEJAMbigeye!!

I will update on this in time.

I’m glad it’s available so I know a little more about it than just what its AARS designation is. I have a number of seedlings from using it’s pollen. So far none have shown the blotch. I do wish the AARS would publish more information about test roses after they have been trialed.

infuriatingly, Eues for You has not set hips for me (sorry George, I had not forgotten) although it is still only a small rose and I did deadhead the first flush (although there did not seem like any sign of fertility). Am thinking this will have to be a pollen partner when I have finally sorted out the basics of germination (disaster this year with either fails or nasty mildewy rubbish…but then, I completely forgot basics and used Zephirine Drouhin seeds - what was I thinking, or not?(

I forgot to mention that Eyes for You and Alissar, PoP are completely clean and healthy, even now when most of my roses are looking distinctly iffy with blackspot and powdery mildew (which has been a huge problem this year)

Hi Campanula!

Best of luck, come your next spring!
