Moyesii tetraploid

Hello,

I am a big fan of Rosa Moyesii. Specifically the species (or one that is consider the species) in the UK. This is due to the deep blood red flowers. I understand it is a hexaploid. If I were to use a canina rose as pollen parent to make use of the uneven meosis then in theory it would make a tetraploid F1 ( was going to use Rubiginosa as the pollen parent due to the deep pink flowers). The beauty of the theory to me is that the tetraploid if it took would be 3 sets Moyesii and 1 set Rubiginosa. Increasing the chance of getting the beautiful red colours whilst also having a healthy rose background. I understand this is a long term project and highly unlikely. Has anyone played with Moyesii and has any insights?

Over the past two years, I’ve experimented with this rose on a very sporadic basis, but unfortunately none of the crosses took. This year, on June 18, 2026, I crossed R. agrestis and R. moyesii. Agrestis is the latest bloomer of the wine rose group. Its foliage has a scent similar to that of R. rubiginosa. Let’s see if anything comes out of it.

Yeah I have all ready stored and frozen Rubiginosa pollen (should have done more). I will be getting one any way as it’s a stunning rose. Doubt I will have any success in it’s first season (next year) but will report back if any take. Thanks for the response, are you trying to achieve the same thing?
