Most intriguing potential parents...

Rob,

I can’t vouch for 4b, but soulieana was perfectly happy in 6b.

Here’s a picture from when I had it years ago:

One thing to remember about MORsoul is Ralph’s Soulieana is odd in that it produces repeaters in ONE generation. Paul Barden has written quite a bit about this. That would be the version of Soulieana someone who wishes to mess with it really needs.

Along those lines, I have a red climber which passed through quite a few hands until it came to reside at a friend’s house in the Santa Clarita Valley. The thing repeats all the time and appears to also contain Dortmund, from its appearance. In that arid climate, it is spotless. I budded many buds on two large pieces of VI IXL and they are acting oddly, but I also have a rooted piece which has grown and is available should someone find it interesting.

The story which accompanied it was that it was potentially a Tom Carruth Soulieana hybrid used to create his line. I sent photos to Tom and he said it wasn’t, but it appeared to be a Soulieana hybrid Jack Christensen created for breeding in the early 80s. Whatever it is, it’s healthy and continuous flowering.

This is the mother plant. @Kim,

That reminds me, I ought to go out and dig some “sucker”* of the “Moore soulieana” to pot up for anyone who wants one next season. Thanks for the reminder.

Dig two, please? That is one I should try to find room for here.

Rob, the CP x fed. seedlings are tiny yet, but they are distinctly less thorny than the OP Carefree Beauty growing next to them. I think I can see little prickles, though. And I think I can see pale yellow on one bud!

The foliage is dull and flirting with chlorosis or some deficiency, unfortunately. I’ll see if I can remember to get some pics.

As I’ve posted previously, mildew is raring its head in the seedling tables due to the really weird weather. I’m not really concerned about it as most will clear up as soon as it dries and warms up.

These are the Cal Poly X Fed. seedlings

Art Nouveau selfed has provided some nicely large and clean leaves

I like the color of Pretty Lady X Gina’s Rose

Another Art Nouveau seedling. I forgot the seed parent between shooting it and getting back in out of the wet

I forgot the cross which produced this one, but the color is really nice!

This summer I had the chance to see Paul Barden’s Garden. Seeing it I was left thinking that Soulieana and Bracteate has a lot of potential. Some of these hybrids of these two are amazing and would be worth the effort to breed from.

Adam, you lucky B####r

Soulieana does well in 9b (Australia) as well. If people want cuttings over winter let me know.

You should go with Paul on a tour of his garden. He will fill your head so full it feels like it’s going to pop!

I feel very fortunate. I wish I would have brought a tape recorder. Jeff your not kidding. He was so informative even on my short visit I felt like information over load near the end.

Jeff, your the second lucky b####r. I hope there are some photos if that is possible.

Kim, I can’t wait to see the blossoms on your Art Noveau seedlings!

Me neither, Joe! I’m attempting to root it in hopes of being able to spread it around a bit more than it is. Keep your fingers crossed! It’s quite prickly, but not very thickly wooded. I know it’s more of a novelty, but one with decent health, at least here. It’s DEFINITELY fertile!
