This is my first miniature rugosa hybrid to bloom. It is Raspberry Rugostar x Diamond Eyes. Not bad for a first try.

Very pretty! Hope it does well in New Jersey!
Thank you John. I have a couple more yet to bloom from this cross and a few from Raspberry Rugostar x Eyeconic Lychee Lemonade. From the latter I’m hoping for miniature rugosa with a blotch.
Looks healthy Rob! Are these first year blooms or are they taking a year to get big enough to start blooming?
[… still planning to dig some rose suckers for you Monday
]
Thomas,
This is a second season first bloom. So far it seems to be very healthy. I’ll be checking this season to see if there is fertility either way.
I look forward to receiving the suckers. I’m happy to report that your 3/4 native has several buds this season so I’ll be using it as a parent for the first time. Very excited about the possibilities.
I had a duplicate entry for this one and kept the one that had comments and deleted the one that didn’t have comments. So, the link above doesn’t work. This is the updated link:
Sorry for any confusion.
Very cool - has better bloom form than a mini rugosa I got from Ann Endt. Mine had one bloom the second year and then became recurrent the third season.

Funny you mention your cross using Ann Endt. I’ll be using Ann Endt as a pollen parent with some of the fertile triploid minis that I have this season. I’m hoping for good results. Good to know that your cross became recurrent the third year. Is there any fertility?
I haven’t made designed crosses - no OP hips so far.
Ann Endt is one of those Rugosa hybrids that will take ‘foreign’ types of rose pollen–a very useful seed parent. Nice seedling, Rob!
Betsy
Great to know. I didn’t think Ann Endt would make a good seed parent but it’s blooming so I’ll give that a try. Planned on using her pollen on some minis.
Congrats on the mini rugosa, Rob!
I have a number of crosses with Ann Endt at the small seedling stage right now.
Joe,
Thank you. Which parent did you use Ann Endt as?
Rob,
I used her both ways, but mostly as a female:
Ann Endt x R. acicularis
Ann Endt x Will Alderman
Ann Endt x R. carolina
Ann Endt x Morning Magic
Ann Endt x Dakota’s Song
Ann Endt x Hazeldean
Yellow Brick Road x Ann Endt
Not great germination for any of these crosses. It was best for Will Alderman pollen.
Joe
Thanks Joe. I will have to try her as a seed parent in addition to as a pollen parent. You have some great crosses there.
Did any of the Ann Endt X carolina seeds germinate?
Sam, yes I have it down that there were 10 Ann Endt X R carolina seedings to germinate. I haven’t looked at them lately, but can report.
Rob, it might be that Ann Endt seeds could use a warm treatment prior to cold stratification. I wish you could visit and see my roses right now. Interesting results in the realm of crossing rugosas and moderns. But I’m getting a little disillusioned at the apparent triploid infertility that can crop up.
Joe,
I would be cool to see your results from crossing rugosas with moderns. I’ve not gotten to the F2 stage to be able to judge fertility in my F1 yet. I have 4 (r. [(rugosa rubra x OP) x OP] x OP where the F1 was treated and deemed to be tetraploid converted (I believe by David Z.) I’m told that all for F3 are tetraploids. If that description holds any interest for you let me know and I’ll see if I can get any rooted suckers this fall. I’ll also have some nitida hybrids as well.
As you know I’m using Raspberry Rugostar as a parent. I’m guessing given the parentage that it is a triploid and it has been very fertile both ways for me. I’m hoping to have less of an issue with fertility using RR than a diploid rugosa. The only downside for me using rugosa blood is that I don’t get blooms generally until the 2nd or 3rd season. Hopefully with F1 and F2 that will be less of an issue.
Would love to see pics of your results if you can share.
Best regards,
Here is an Ann Endt X Petit Pink that germinated last year. The rose next to it is of the same parentage.

It’s beautiful Joe! Great choice in parentage. I love the narrow leaves on the adjacent plant of the same parentage.
