Livin Easy x Ebb Tide

The bud is Oklahmoa red. It is dark purple with an orange-ish base at this stage. When it is fully opened, the petals become wavy and are lavender with smoky purple tints. I really like this seedling.

Ooo, one of my favorite combinations of colors! Beautiful! Good job!

Nice looking flower. It surprises me that Livin Easy seedlings are not showing much vigor. I haven’t started crossing yet but will cross LE with Octoberfest, laaattteeer.

Half or more of Ebb Tide seedlings are looking good and should have a good amount of horizonal resistance with vigor. Only two seedlings of ET in flower so far one is deep purple with two more buds and the other is a sickly none fading contortid double with fair yellow color. Neil

Nice… is it fragrant as well?

It smells like Livin Easy (moderate fruity).

I’m glad ya got Ebb Tide seedlings, Neil. It is a wonderful rose, with some obvious faults, but it seems like a great rose to move forward with.

I used ET this season as mom rose and it played nasty games with me…every single cross failed onto it, from spring right up to fall… mind I did throw some weird pollens onto it like Alain Blanchard, so whatever… The very last round of pollinations onto it in early fall did result in hips, those hips are still cooking (early winter here now) and are nearly ready to color up now.

It has tested my patience, but prolly worth the effort…

Is it still growing own-root or have you grafted it? How old is it now?

It is own-root. I refuse to graft. I dont really want to create roses that need to be grafted. It is from the 2009 crop of germinations, but it was transplanted twice, so it isnt as big as it should have been. It should max out at 3’

I wouldnt use Ebb Tide, especially as a seed parent, in iffy crosses because the reproductive parts kind of funky because of the bloom fullness. Also, it doesnt set a whole lot of seed. This is why, other than the fact that LE has Alexander in it (neon orange), I used Livin Easy – I knew it set easily and gave a lot of seeds. One can see the orange present on the low right petals.

Ebb Tide does produce some nice violet colored flowers. I haven’t had much of a problem with it, but about half of its offspring fail to thrive after 2nd or 3rd bloom even though they started out looking vigorous. I have had to “super coddle” Ebb Tide and it is really producing large sprays of flowers this yr., and will try that with a few of the nicer offspring. It has passed on fragrance in many of its’ offspring. Orange tinted bases sound great.

Good to know. ‘Ebb Tide’ is a dud here that hates life in general. We don’t have ‘Midnight Blue’ so this is the next best thing. I’ve tried growing ET cuttings and they almost always fail. In the few times that they have worked the plants also grew very poorly. ET has been in the ground about 3-4 years now and every year it keeps going backwards and it makes very little foliage. Now that it is winter here I’m going to dig it out and put it into a large pot. This will be its last lifeline before I throw it out. I have only tried it as a seed parent once and it didn’t work though it sets large numbers of OP hips and the seeds come up easily. I’ve collected about 300 of them this season to try again to see if by reshuffling the genes something a little more reliable can be found. My experience with OP ET seedlings is that they almost all come out the same colour as ET but have serious mildew issues which to me points to poor root systems. I’ve only ever got one pink seedling from it. I use it each season as a pollen parent on wichurana parents and this year I’ve actually got it to stick and have seed so I was interested to know whether or not your seedling was going well own root and whether it continues to build over time instead of going backwards as I really don’t want to make roses that need grafting or fussing over either.

These three rows are some of the Ebb Tide seedlings. As you can and can’t see some are going to be red, yellow and what ever. The yellow if it gets past mildew could be interesting since it’s is not fading and is lasting longer than the purple. My Ebb Tide is on it’s third year and getting better every year with no fuss. The latest cane is about two foot tall and has 16 buds.

I think the key with Ebb Tide is to match it with something that has root vigor. Once established, it is an awesome plant. It is just slow to build, is all.

Neil, excuse my ignorance what and when seedlings flower, could you tell me how old these ones are please, thanks.

Would have to agree with Michael on that as well. ET definitely needs time to give its best. I definitely don’t see ET liking any sort of transplantation or root disturbance, prolly will set it back further. Having said that, it was bred in a non-Australian climate / location, so if it fails to thrive wherever else, it is not a surprise either. My current ET is prolly number 5 out of so many I gave the shovel, mainly out of crazy indecisiveness at the time. It is ~3 year old plant…This current one is stayin’ put where it currently is, whether it likes it or not!

I think you are right… I think I will try grafting it onto something non-Huey too to see if that helps it here.

David, I don’t keep track of how old they are only how long since transplanting, somewhat. These are 8 weeks out of the seed trays. After stratification it’s very temperature dependent.

Michael, I have seedlings with good root vigor alright, but little else, other than setting seed and germinating good and am now waiting to see if any these F2’s are going to be good for anything Neil

Has anyone purchsed /seen Carruth’s new release Twilight Zone?

TZ = Ebb Tide ™ (floribunda, Carruth 2001) × Della Reese

Flower looks totally delicious.

I wonder is it coming to Oz?

The answer to your question George is YES

George I just got Twilight Zone this Spring. It is growing in a 3 gal pot in my brand new pot ghetto. Last I checked (about 3 days ago) it looked like it was putting on some serious new growth. I let one bloom open a few weeks back but as it was opening a storm came through so I cannot say much about the bloom form or fragrance - the color was nice though. The foliage looks like it is doing well considering it is in a pot and not the ground. I’ll try to take some notes at its next blooming cycle.

Great looking seedling, Jadae. I’m just a wee bit jealous, I had Ebb Tide a few years ago - amazing blooms, but this failure to thrive aspect pretty much did it in. Midnight Blue is a bit better, but not by much. At least MB is still alive, ET just died on me. I have no idea what it was grafted on, but it probably was not multiflora. I have a whack of seedlings from crosses using MB as the pollen parent. I’m hoping something interesting pops up in them. The rose that I really like from that lineage is Outta the Blue. I have used it a bit as a seed parent, but not so much as a pollen parent, yet.
