Late maturing rose hips do they need stratification?

Hi. Im in far northern California. After a very wet spring most of my pollinating wasn’t successful until late summer early fall. I have hips that are finally becoming orange now. We have had a few cold months. Is that enough stratification? The cold snap was mostly before the hips really turned orange. And should I hold off until the hips are totally orange? Most of them are still jist partially orange. Thanks!

Very likely they’ve received everything they need for successful germination. If you’re using primarily modern types, you probably don’t need to “cold stratify” them at all. I haven’t refrigerated any seeds in twenty-plus years and haven’t had any issues with germination.

Partially orange sounds OK to me. Have fun!
