I collected a ton of Knock Out hips last fall and had decent germination from the seeds. The vast majority were single and either red or pink. Many had decent scent. This is the first that is fully double. The bloom is another day or so away from fully opening with more petals tucked insdie. It also has good scent. I’ll grow this one on to watch the bloom cycle and disease resistance and hopefully it will prove itself.
Thank you George! These seeds came from a garden with only Knock Out growing there. There are no other roses located near by so I believe this to be Knock Out x Knock Out. It has to be exhibting doubleness from genes of one of it’s ancestors. There are a couple more that are still in early bud stage but they seem to have a little more fullness to the bud when gently squeezed. I think this was just the luck of the draw by growing a lot of seeds and looking for something different to appear.
Congrats, Rob! That one looks like a lot of fun. Even if it ends up with reduced blossoming, maybe it will have better fertility…don’t toss it too quickly.
Here is another Knock Out x Knock Out seedling that is in bud with apricot on the outside of the petal with yellow at the base. The inside color from what I can tell is more like salmon. I’ll get more pics when it opens fully. There are genes for orange and yellow in KO’s ancestry and it’s nice to see it expressed after all of the reds and pinks I’ve been tossing.
That looks an awful lot like a Rainbow KO seedling. Any possibility? I’ve never seen anything that far from plain red with KO or DKO. I’m up to 30-50% germ with nitrate but seeds are hard to find so only maybe a hundred total KO seedlings looked at. Would be a good thing either way.
It’s definitely KO x KO, not Rainbow Knock Out. I’m guessing it’s exhititing color from Playboy and/or Tampico. I think I got very lucky with this seedling as far as color goes.
I had over 50% germination of over 200 KO seeds and so far 4-5 have possibilities of being something good. I was beginning to think that KO seeds were a waste of time but in the last couple of weeks I’ve obtained fully double to semi double and now this color in a seedling. I guess it wasn’t really a waste of time. I had another KO seedling this morning that bloomed a velvety dark red with red stamens and some scent. Although a single, I may grow it on because of the color.
I will post pics of some of the more interesting variants. I should be able to get a picture of the deep red single with the red anthers tonight. I have 3 more in bud that have a fuller bud that might be interesting when they open. I’m still gettting germination so there might be more.
Here is a picture of the most recent to bloom. The color here doesn’t due it justice. It’s a great dark velvety red with darker red highlights and red anthers.
That does look like it has great depth of color. And from my experience, unless you are a professional photog., that is how red velvety colors look in a photograph. Very nice red.
