Knock Out and DKO + minis???

I can’t recall anyone mentioning this… has anyone tried adding KO or DKO to minis and if so what was the result?

Hi Simon,

I started using DKO with minis last year. I crossed it with ‘Pearl Sanford’ and a couple of my mini Hulthemias. There is more powdery mildew in these, but I have kept 3 of the ‘Pearl Sanford’ seedlings that didn’t get any PM, for further evaluation. One that I like the most is more petite and has lots of petals with a good red color. As it matures, it might even develop descent form.

With the Hulthemias, DKO seems to resist blotch development more than most other crosses. It may require crossing back with other Hulthemias to bring out better blotch definition and hopefully retain better cleanliness.

Thanks, Jim!

How do the KO/DKO features seem to translate to miniature form? Have you had a chance ot test any of these KO/DKOx mini seedlings outside yet to see if the resistance of KO makes any difference to the health of the minis…closer to the ground? I’m also curious about KO/DKO x poly as well. I have seeds of ‘Alice Amos’ x ‘DKO’ in the fridge now.

I ordered a Whimsy this spring. It barely survived shipment only to be eaten by a caterpillar. It has Double KO as pollen parent and is listed as a miniature.

Mine is setting hips. It looks like a good rose, but I think it hates dry heat, much like Ketchup and Mustard does.

Hi Simon,

Yes, some of these appear to be true minis. Since mine are new seedlings, they have not yet been evaluated outside.

Thanks for each of your replies. My intention is to put DKO and maybe KO onto a climbing mini I have called ‘Laura Ford’… still trying to work out what other non-climbing mini to put it on.

Jim, I’m going to put the hulthemia onto ‘Laura Ford’ this season too. It seems that when used as a seed parent the flowers on its seedlings often seem to take on a lot of the characteristics of the pollen parent (see 'roses like ‘Gloriana’ and ‘Love Knot’) and the foliage and climbing habit seem to [pass on from ‘Laura Ford’. It’s also super healthy for me here. So… I’m going to use it to try for a climbing hulthemia. It doesn’t make sense to me why might be so but looking at its descendants list this is how it appears to work.
