Japanese beetles - a solution

Here’s a solution to protect the new blooms from the voracious invaders. It’s a cheap organza drawstring bag from the craft store. I got a pack of them for a coupla bucks. It looks funny, but hopefully I’ll get some self-pollinated hips.

I use these to help me easily see hips that are ripening and avoid cutting them when I’m deadheading the rest of the plant. Also, are effective to prevent deer from feasting on hips…and other varmints as well.

I like them, but beware that in windy weather, the loose ends of the little ribbon things will get caught and frayed, and they can be very frustrating to untangle when they’re tightly wound between the thorns of a rugosa stem.

Their clinginess does have a good side: to cover hips that are at risk of falling off. This way if ithe hip drops, either the bag will heep it positioned on the plant, or at least it will be easy to locate the hip in the bag on the ground.
