Kathy,
I sent you a private email regarding Brown Study.
Andrew,
I undoubtedly have several Moore roses gifted to me over the years that are not in any collection outside of the one TAMU maintains. I will contact you privately to see if I have any you might want.
Paul
Hi Paul,
Do you have any stripes available? Just wondering also about your striped Jocelyn sport, is anyone selling it?
Jeanie,
I do have some rare striped roses. I am willing to propagate anything that is not commercially available, and that might serve a purpose in a breeding program. (I should have stated specifically from the start that I was offering to propagate breeding material, not just things to add to private collections; my mistake) I have the very attractive McGredy stripe ‘Papageno’, which I gather can be used in breeding. It has nearly ZERO Blackspot resistance, however. Something to bear in mind.
The Striped Jocelyn sport is now in the Rogue Valley Roses collection where it is being propagated for sale in the future. I do not know anything about the production schedule, you’ll have to inquire with RVR about that.
For those interested in other Ralph Moore roses, TAMU is working on developing a relationship with a nursery that can sell retail. That is still in the future.

I don’t spray my ‘Papageno’ at all Paul… location, location, location, again huh
A friend of mine who lives in Goulbourn, NSW (here in Oz) also grows ‘Papaegno’ and also reports its lack of black spot resistance. Mine just keeps on going and hardly loses a leaf.
Wow Simon – Papageno is the worse (bar none) rose for powdery mildew in my garden. We don’t get blackspot in Southern California, but for our disease of choice (mildew) Papageno is the hands down winner for most disease prone. And I do spray fungicides weekly. It’s planted in the ground in my rented house here, and when I move, it’s staying.
Paul – I did not get your email.

Yeah, I love McGredy’s work for the most part but some of his choices when working with, then, new color/pattern types, were really poor in regards to disease. I seriously wish the stripers from his work were not descendants of trash like Eyepaint and Anytime. To add insult to injury, he used Freude, which can be a good breeder but can also create mildew issues if bred with roses not specifically mildew-resistant =/ Using New Year in Oranges and Lemons was an equally bad idea. Old Port is another ruined by nasty disease stemming from Eyepaint. It could have otherwise been a really good rose.
However, he had some of the most beautiful modern roses in their time as well. There seemed to be a lot of emphasis on vigor and foliage aesthetic.
If any of you want a strong colored striper, try to find Candle in the Wind. It is basically a mini-floribunda type that grows like a hybrid musk. Its a strange semi-double rose of pure orange striped dark copper and sometimes lemon. It blooms in big clusters. The growth habit remind me of Erfurt but with like miniflora-type foliage. Its weird
But it is definitely fertile and the color is very strong. I know that it is definitely a seedling of Phantom of the Opera. It seems far enough removed from Eyepaint to have escaped the curse of instant defoliation. I have no clue what the other parent is, but I am guessing it is an orange, apricot or yellow toned floribunda type.
Kathy,
I emailed the address you listed as your contact addy here on RHA. That said, ‘Brown Study’ appears to have not survived the digging up process. I don’t expect it to survive. Sorry!
Paul
Jim,
Great news ! I do not feel so much pressure now … I have been building up stock of Ralph Moore roses for over a year now, and have my license. Hopefully, it will not be a Ca. nursery that can not ship to Fl! But,IF it is, at least I can help in Florida. It would be nice to try doubles of a few I have to see if I can find a better clone.
Jadae, Candle in the Wind is one I will look for. Thank you for the information on it being fertile!
Paul, Striped Joceyln has been on my want list from RVR since the second I found out it was listed on HMF. Thank you for offering such a nice looking striped sport!
Regards,
Andrew
