Hip maturation of R. virginiana

Does anyone have insight as to how long it takes R. virginiana (and/or carolina) hips to ripen?

I was surprised to see that the ones I planted this spring are blooming and I was tempted to try some late crosses.

Joe

Hi Joe,

The hips ripen fairly quickly and even in our climate you shouldn’t have any trouble getting them to ripen if you do the crosses now.

I agree with Julie, plenty of time left. If your experience matches my own you may find it quite difficult to distinguish any F1 virginiana hybrids, though. I gave up and went the other way this season and used virginiana pollen.

Thank you, Julie and Don. That’s fun to hear.

I am also going to try some rugosa crosses.

Hi Don

Virginiana pollen give virginiana look alike seedlings also…
