First Kiss looks close but the rose I have is older and I have at least 150 seedlings going back a ways. Neil
First Kiss probably. Sweet Afton, definitely not.
Clair Martin, the former Curator of Roses at The Huntington, used to tell a story of a couple who approached him in the gardens. The wife asked if the grew the rose “French Kiss”. Clair slowly broke in to his smirk and asked, “Do you mean French Lace, or First Kiss?” The husband began laughing hysterically while his wife stomped off!
‘French Kiss’ is available, Kim… I shotty calling a rose ‘French Kiss’… it will go with another of mine I’ll call ‘Pashing Off’ lol
On another note… could the red one in the initial post be ‘Lilli Malene’ or ‘Marlena’?
I have Lili Marlene out back where it’s grown for nearly forty years. It was an old plant when the house was purchased in 1975. Jeff’s rose is nothing like it.
Thanks guys, First Kiss it is then and not as old as I thought it was. The one decendant sounds familiar. It does and doesn’t surprise me that this rose hasn’t been used a lot more for breeding. As a group resistant to everything around here including damp off and MD although I think there was aphids on one plant for awhile. F1s so far haven’t set many hips. About half are evergreen and under 2ft. of snow still look good. The down side is the pastel colors and a lot of singles and doubles, some with smaller flowers. Already gave a rooted cutting of a seedling to a California resident. Neil
Simplicity has always impressed me as definitely the stated Iceberg parent, but also with a seedling out of First Kiss. It LOOKS like it and rusts like it.
First Kiss is not everygreen and it does get some BS. The seedlings are something else. Neil
Any ideas on what this one might be? The first picture is from last fall, the second is from today. I suppose the weather has something to do with the expression of the veining/feathering and the color in general. It’s a very healthy plant, looks like it will set hips well and isn’t showing any disease on it. Flowers are about 2" across in nice sprays.

The first photo resembles what Gypsy Dancer looks like in Newhall. I haven’t seen it that solid yellow.
Thanks Kim. That looks like it!
