In my 7 years working for Will Radler, we have never had a germination boom like this. We are already at over 700 germination when in years past we would just be getting to 100. Im very excited but also curious to know if anyone else is experiencing a germination boom this year? In other fun news at Rose Innovations, the rose room is completely hydroponically set up and just putting the finishing touches on the baby racks!
Now that’s what I call a finished basement. What is the purpose of the blue grid cards that are dangling from the lamps?
Blue pest-monitoring sticky traps I presume? (I know dear flies are attracted to blue, but have no clue know when blue v. yellow is preferable and for which pests… Anybody know? [Edited to acknowledge the product I linked to explains coloring. Duh.])

Sweet setup. (Beats the heck out of my windowsills!)
Hello, i’m wondering what your ripening and stratification schedule is to experience so many germinations already. I have just picked my hips.
A lot of our germinations are from our previous years crosses. We keep seed for three years, rewetting in fall and then drying and putting in fridge at the end of the planting season (February-March). As for collecting hips, we like to grab hips just as they are turning color. Like to clean them as soon as we can and put in clear bag with wet paper towel. Then let seeds sit for two weeks at room temperature and then fridge for two weeks. After the fridge they go in the cold room.
I won’t know about germinations from this year until January. But I will note that for reasons unclear to me, my 2025 hip-set success abruptly improved from a very steady and predictable 25 - 27% to nearly 40%.
This is not unmitigated good news, because even if germination % remains the same, I have exceeded my “greenhouse” maximum capacity.
