(Fragrant Cloud x Rosa carolina) X Carefree Sunshine

My mildew-resistant seedling from this cross finally is blooming and so is one of its siblings. I don’t think either one is going to repeat.

If you’re interested you can see them at the link below.

Wow, that’s excellent Tom! Congratulations!

Beautiful! Mazel tov!

Tom, those are nice blooms. How long did it take to get the first blooms from seeds?

Jim Sproul

Thanks all.

I’m thinking this is it’s third growing season, Jim. That’s from a seed that was germinated outside in a plastic milk-jug bottom – overwintered outside for stratification.

Yeah, that’s right, now that I think about it…

I planted it where it’s growing now, in June or July of 2005, right after we moved into the new place. It had just germinated that Spring [2005]. So I actually did the cross in 2004.

3 years from cross, 2 from germination

Beautiful! Did Fragrant Cloud contribute it’s scent?

The seed parent has a strong but more old-rosey scent than ‘Fragrant Cloud’. I’m sure that has something to do with it having two strongly-scented parents (‘Fragrant Cloud’ X Rosa carolina).

Unfortunately, the mildew-resistant offspring of that one (from ‘Carefree Sunshine’ pollen) doesn’t have as strong of a scent as its mother or maternal grandparents. It takes after ‘Carefree Sunshine’ more in the scent department. It’s still fairly fragrant – I’m just spoiled and expected (or at least was hoping) that it should have a whole lot more.
