Can anybody verify whether this seedling of Bonica actually sets hips, and/or sheds viable pollen?
I haven’t really looked at Bonica nor its descendants in a number of years, but this one intrigues me. it is a richer color, and allegedly fragrant.
Does anybody have any experience with it?
I’m sorry to say that I didn’t quite have it long enough to try using in breeding because it caught RRD early on, and the disease progressed into the roots in record time. I didn’t notice much in the way of fragrance, but it did have vibrant color and excellent health (other than the RRD), and I definitely thought that it had potential.
Thanks, Stefan. I think I’m going to go ahead and acquire it to experiment with it.
I don’t think Bonica is worth breeding with directly. As one of the recent favorite world roses, I figure it was been mined to the moon and back for whatever potential it had, and mostly, it appears it offered potential for washed out pinks, if I am recalling Baul Barden’s observations correctly.
Flamenco intrigues me though for the depth of color, size of bloom, and alleged fragrance, but I see no reports of any offspring.
I suppose it is 1/4 synstyllae, and might play nice with e.g. setigera. Hmmm…
