First Seedling to bloom this winter....

Isn’t that interesting? The second bud opened today.

Wow, I really like the color mix on SnT the more you post pics Kim! I have a few other seedlings to bloom soon that look like they will be fuller blooms and in the orange to peach color…will have to wait to see. I did have one bright orange seedling bloom that exhibited a lack of resistance to BS so that one got tossed. Thanks for posting those pics

Reminds me a lot of Sue Lawly, or Stretch Johnson, or Matangi, and then I looked them up and see the relatedness. Of course this is smaller-but how do they compare in disease resistance? Love the look of the ‘hand painted’ but everyone points out the notorious blackspot.

Show ‘n’ Tell has been better against black spot around these parts then the McGredy handpainted ones. Quite a few years ago, I led a garden tour at a Huntington event. Mr. McGredy’s Australian agent was in the group as were a number of people from New Zealand and Colin and Mrs. Horner. I took them to Champaine Coctail and pointed out how British floribundas grow in our endless summers. Mrs. Horner said, “That’s YOUR rose, dear!” and a lady from Australia chimed in she didn’t know they had any rose breeders in the group. I offered that it wasn’t JUST another painted rose, but that Mr. Horner had single handedly put foliage on the McGredy handpainted roses! So many in these parts are quite susceptible to black spot. The agent was NOT happy.

Show ‘n’ Tell has been spotless in gardens where Sue Lawley, Matangi, Old Master and their like haven’t been. I currently have Old Master and Picasso, both of which have had a few issues this year. SnT hasn’t. I DO love the painted qualities it develops, especially the russet tones when the purple hazes over the brilliant orange. And, that pure white reverse…striking!

I love the burnt orange color and stippling on the petals! Well, I’m always crazy about freckles, spots or stripes of any kind, lol.

Me, too, Seil. I collected all the painted, stippled, striped, mottled and oddly colored types I could find for years. I’d still love to raise a green and brown stripe.

Ooo, green or brown would be way cool, Kim!

Well, in fairness to McGredy, Show ‘n’ Tell does have a lot of his work in its lineage, and through Matangi, it has Picasso’s gene’s, which no doubt account for the hand-painted effect.

…But tell me about its progeny, Kim!

(I’m not finding a retailer for it state-side…)

I haven’t yet germinated anything from it, Philip, but Ralph raised many seedlings from it, both OP and deliberately bred. One of the OP ones I grew for quite a few years in the old garden and loved how brown and healthy it was. Most Unusual Day came from it and is truly a novelty on a less than spectacular plant. Health and vigor are issues with it. Cherry Hi was quite a nice mini in Newhall with good vigor and health. I don’t grow any of its babies currently, but am making use of it as time permits. I can supply you cuttings of Show ‘n’ Tell if you want them. Just let me know. I can put a bunch of them in a Small Flat Rate box for about $5.20. SnT is healthier here in Encino than either Old Master or Picasso. Interested?
