(The “xOP”-business is from a two-week pairing of Danae & Sweet Chariot on the neighbours’ deck, then tagging those spent flowers. ELEVEN seedlings from 14 seeds is pretty spectacular. I’ll be pissed if they’re pink selfs.)
Wow good effort! Is this the first year using one of your other roses as a pollen parent?
James, if you mean pollen from a seedling I raised, then YES IT IS!!
I also saved pollen from a couple other of last year’s seedlings to use this season; it’s in the freezer, ready willing and hopefully able.
With you there. I have had a very good season and it’s still going! I’m hoping the weather is as kind to breeding as last year was. I want to match/ increase production from this year. Very excited
Excellent and frugal strategy for use of the sunny spots. Lived the plastic protection
Gorgeous results. I’m more confident I can get something nice out of Cardinal Hume. Do they have any fragrance at all?
Light fragrance plant are healthy
Just to confirm that this looks like fertiliser burn? Interestingly the only ones suffering are from gallica back ground. Hopefully this one will get over it
I am happy that this seedling, a repeated cross between “Rose de Rescht” and “Eye of the Tiger,” was the only one that germinated on February 24, 2026, and—most notably, which is quite unusual for a descendant of “Rose de Rescht”—is already forming a juvenile bloom. The leaves are still varying in shape. Some are wrinkled and have a strong resinous scent, while others are smooth and scentless. The first bud is very resinous. I’m really curious to see how this interesting seedling will progress.

Sorry I realise I hadn’t added the image before
The fertiliser burnt roses are mostly recovered. Another 2 culled with a further one on the edge. The little plastic container with X1 seedlings is the X4 cycle of cold Aicha seedling ( 3 months in the fridge and then 3 more 2 week periods). Space is going to get crazy as I still have more germinations coming up in trays
Here’s a quick tip based on my own experience: for seedlings at the stage you’ve shown, I recommend using pots that are just a tad smaller. Seedlings root more effectively and quickly in smaller pots because they have more stability and support. Plus, in larger pots, the soil at the bottom often remains unused and stays moist, which can lead to rot. That’s why I only move them to the next larger pot once the old one is well-rooted. A small side benefit: you’ve gained a bit more space for your plentiful seedlings.
I am thoroughly enjoying ur germination success. Well done as said before.
By the way which picture is the prize hybrid seeding ?
I am still blanked this season. 4th recycle at ambient.
I think it’s the negative attitude of the rubbish weather this spring - l am reaching for a reason (no idea).
Picture from this Thursday of NA robins out my window … as DW caught plane to the very green Island. Got suet for poor lads as heavy snowfall. It been very poor weather this spring in zone 4A prairies/ foothills though going to plus 15 next week … better as bare roots arriving.
The one that took all the work to germinate is in the see through plastic container with the singular small seedling in it. There are 22 other seeds in there which I believe are still viable. In 4 weeks time I will be putting the other seeds back for a few more months stratification to see if they believe 2 seasons have passed. Other than that I would say I do have 5-6 favourites based on current leaf shape and form. Sad to hear you have had poor germination rates this far.
Thank you for the tip, I normally pot up the roses from those small pots once they have roots filling the bottom. I then used 3 litre deep pots as the height gives me slightly more space at this stage. However typically my seeds come out of the fridge later in the year than they did this year. So when I typically put them into the 3 litre pots they filled them rather quickly. This has not been the case this year.
