First germinations of 2014

I’d bet your Midnight Blue x Lynnie to have moderate prickles and be pink, Andre. This is DLFED 3, the mossy DLFED seedling crossed with Midnight Blue.

KIm, in the bottom photo, would/could it be used for a deer fence, very prickely

If that prickle level held to the cane tips, probably, David. They do thin out and morph from those dense bristles to larger, hooked prickles toward the middle then the very tips are virtually prickle free. I’d try to photograph them, but we’ve received over 5.5" of rain in the past twelve hours with more on the way. The whole yard is like soupy oatmeal right now. It just ain’t fair. Less than 40% of the annual rainfall totals expected in the past three years. Last years total received in twelve hours. Nope, nothing’s up with the weather.

I imagine that is exactly what I would get Kim. BTW I’m glad to hear you’re getting some of that needed rain. Let’s hope the rain does not overcompensate for the drought.

Thanks, Andre. We’re up nearly an inch in the past two hours. The most local station is now reading 6.4" since midnight.

You all are getting lovely blooms already! I’m just happy to have some germinating at this point. I’ve had 30 germinate in the last 2 weeks. Pookah and Blue For You are leading the pack though with 12 apiece. And man is that Pookah vigorous! I have one seedling that germinated on 2/22 that’s already about 4 inches tall and branching out nicely with a couple of others not far behind. I’m excited to see what it will look like.

today:

Carmella x Strawberry Cream (Byrnes, miniature)

Carmella has rugosa blood through Rugelda: Rugelda x (Westerland × seedling)

Hoping for colorful stripes, scent and great health on a smaller stature plant. Rugose type leaves would be great.

So far my planned crosses are not germinating. I actually glad about that. For several reasons, I’d like to keep their time inside at a bare minimum. I know that spring will come, even though it is seems somewhat reluctant here in Northern Indiana! I do have some open pollinated seed germinating.

Hansa x Double Knock Out?

Assorted shrub rose seed collected from the International Rose Test Garden in Portland, Oregon.

Unknown pink climber my mother-in-law loves and has had for years. It usually defoliates from black spot in late summer. The early flushes of bloom are beautiful, and it does have some sentimental value. It was at its best on our wedding day. I guess my sentimental nature is one thing that keeps me from culling as relentlessly as I should!

Occasionally I will have a rose I like coming from unknown parentage. Do you have any suggestions on how to address that particular plant if it is used in breeding? I have seen some just call it “seedling.”

A couple more germinations over the weekend with some nice variety:

Yellow Brick Road X Prairie Princess
Yellow Brick Road X Prairie Lass
Yellow Brick Road X Lafter
Winnipeg Parks X Country Doctor
Stephen’s Big Purple X Yellow Brick Road
Queen o’ the Lakes X Lynnie

I’ll be very interested to see your results from Queen o’ the Lakes X Lynnie, Andre. Pretty Lady X Lynnie has generated some very good vigor, gorgeous foliage and some pretty nice flowers, a few with some very decorative sepals. Of course, they are all variations of medium red to pastel pink! If I remember to get around to it, this year I must make more of the Pretty Lady X Indian Love Call cross. That could bring in apricots and perhaps, yellows. Knowing Murphy, more pinks with possibly a white or two are more likely.

Thanks Kim. I am pretty excited about that cross too. This was a test cross so I only did one cross but in that 1 hip I got 32 seeds! Lynnie will be going on quite a lot of varieties this year.

I got some pretty good results with Queen o’ the Lakes last year. My favorite was Seedling 13-130 (QUEENL KNKOUT02). It was one of 3 Queen o’ the Lakes X Knock Outs that I kept. Seedling 13-037 QUEENL KNKOUT01) was a close second to it. Both were doing quite well at the end of last summer so can’t wait for them to wake up and show me a little bit more maturation this year. I also had a few Queen o’ the Lakes X Frontenac - I am hoping to add some good cold hardiness to QoL. It seems to produce a lot more seeds per hip than most of my seed parents which allows me to get a large number of seedlings out of it.

QoL is a solid HT here in Iowa - it has above average BS resistance and better than average winter hardiness. With the winter we had this year (bitterly cold) I might lose quite a bit of the uncovered portion of the plant, but it usually comes back pretty strong. The great things about this variety (for me) is that it is compact with lots of good branching (at least grown on its own roots) and it readily produces hips. It is also the product of one of my favorite crosses (Pink Princess X Crimson Glory) which produced several good offspring - Curly Pink and Country Doctor being the two others of this cross that I grow.

Lynnie will be used on Country Doctor and Pink Princess this year. Curly Pink is better as a pollen parent so I will be putting Curly Pink on Lynnie. It will be interesting to see any similarities between these planned crosses.

Links to the seedlings I mentioned from last year:

Emasculate Lynnie earlier than you may other varieties. Very early pollen shedding is common with Legacy and its offspring. If you wait too long, you’ll get a pile of selfs, which can be rather decent in their own rights, but not what you had wanted.

A couple of new seed lots have started germinating. Nicole x Home Run and (Carefree Beauty x Home Run) x (Outta the Blue x Baby Love). I’m really excited to see what comes out of this second cross.

The Everest Double Fragrance x (Carefree Beauty x Pretty Lady) germinations that I posted about earlier have been quite abundant and the seedlings are very vigorous.

Now if only spring would show up. I’ve got 17 Kentucky Coffee Tree seedlings that are getting big and will out grow my light set up soon…

Today:

Walking on Sunshine x (Westerland x (Golden Angel x L83))

Walking on Sunshine x Strawberry Cream

(Midnight Blue x Cinco de Mayo) x Diamond Eyes

Today:

Carefree Sunshine x (Westerland x (Golden Angel x L83))

The Pollen parent 'WGAL' Rose is a disease free shrub with a 2" bi-color bloom. There are some good bloodlines for this one. Based on parentage this seedling should be hardy. Hoping for continued health and yellow, peach, apricot or orange color.

Country Dancer x Double Knockout
Diamond Eyes OP

Today:

Oso Easy Peachy Cream x All a Twitter. Hoping for a healthy orange/peach miniature
Raspberry Rugostar x Strawberry Cream (Byrnes, miniature). Ideally a striped miniature rugosa type.

Today:

(Strawberry Cream x 1-72-1) x Diamond Eyes
Hoping for purple striped miniature.

Cal Poly x Flower Carpet Amber
Looking for yellow/peach and healthy miniature.

Walking on Sunshine x (Abraham Darby x (Golden Angel x L83))

I have over 250 seedlings so far - however, many are OP. I’m still looking for nicely fertile seed parents. Oso Happy Candy Oh has proven to produce seedlings with extreme branching even at a very immature stage. One seedling has 6 buds, but is only 3" tall. I hope to see color soon! I do have several planned crosses germinating, 08MYWIR1 x R. primula, Innocence x Doorenbos Selection to name a few.

Today:

Carefree Beauty x Jeri Jennings

The hopes for this cross is fully double, OGR style bloom, strong fragrance, yellow/peach color, hardiness and great resistance. Some fertility would be a bonus. Paul Barden’s Jeri Jennings is one of my favorite roses.
