Fertilizing mother plants

Can’t seem to find this topic addressed clearly, but wondering what is your experience with fertilization of mother plants. From somewhere I have in mind that too much can cause dropped hips, but can’t locate a reference? Also any difference between impact of granular vs foliar on hips? Thanks

Generally, plants which “think” they are in danger of dying, tend to set MUCH more fruit than those which are well fed with plenty of resources. Joe Winchell used to “root prune” by running a shovel through the root zone around his seed plants to make them ‘think’ they were going to die to force them to set more hips. Think of old apricot and peach trees on their last legs tending to appear to fruit themselves to death.

It depends on the plant. Different plants need different substances that fertilize them.

If you want to answer these questions, you have to tell us what plants you have in your garden and what exactly happened to them. Still, I am not a specialist in this field, and I can’t help you with a good suggestion. However, as far as I know, with the best weed puller, you can solve such a problem without the need to buy different fertilizers. Find more on the internet on this topic. There are entire articles about how to fertilize a plant. Check it out by yourself. I am sure you won’t be disappointed about that.
