Fall Newsletter was Mailed Today 11/18/11

The printer’s new press problems have been fixed and the newsletter was mailed today. Very good issue with lots of interesting and useful information.

I printed a few extra copies so if you are not a member and join now, you will be able to get a copy. The same holds if your membership expired and you didn’t get around to renewing in time.

I received the newsletter last night and of course I read it from front cover to back cover already. I enjoyed it very much and I especially liked Joe

I’m glad you liked the article, Paul!

Kudos to Betsy and Michel and all the contributors for all their work putting together a classy publication. I know that there is a debate about moving to an all-electronic format, but there is something about turning pages that can’t yet be matched by a device.

I was grateful for Betsy’s tip about the Parentage Bloodline option under the lineage tab on HMF. I hadn’t clicked into that before; it’s cool to see the list of all of a roses ancestors.

While we’re passing around gratitude, let’s hear it for the silent wizards responsible for www.helpmefind.com.

I’m all for going to digital publishing because it reduces the burden of expense, and (at least in theory) reduces the demand on physical resources.

Thanks Betsy and Michel for an outstanding issue! Paul is right about the digital publishing. This is something we must and will do! From everything I have heard, there will be a postage increase next year, so we need to become more efficient in our distribution. Joe - I grant you that there is something about turning pages, but you can print a copy and then enjoy turning the pages of an all COLOR issue!

Excellent thought! All color issue.

Lovely issue. I sat my butt down and let the chores go and read it cover to cover. Thank you, to ALL who contributed to this issue.

I personally like having a paper copy. If it goes digital, I hope a choice will be available, even if there is an extra charge for the paper copy, I would be willing to pay it.

Jim

Jim,

There will always be a paper copy as everyone does not use a computer. I am sure there will be options to go digital, hard copy or both. We have not had discussions on that at this point, but I am sure that will happen. Our first step will be to get the digital version working!

John

Thanks to all of you for your kind comments. Doesn’t everyone agree that Joe Bergeson needs to write more articles now that his talent has been revealed?

Joe Bergeson needs to write more articles

Blockbuster article, great photos. In fact, I would really like to see the high resolution versions so I can see exactly how Bill Radler covers and marks his crosses.

Now maybe people will believe me that he salts his garden with Diplocarpon.

Great newsletter Betsy.

I really enjoyed the article on Bill Radler. I may not like the flowers of knock out but he certainly has breed a very good plant. The article written by Joe is very well written.

I am also enjoying the forum piece that has been appearing in the newsletter.

I personally enjoy the paper version more than a digital copy but if it saves money for the association I would take the digital copy over paper every time.

Lastly I would like to thank John for his service and want to thank Jim for filling the needed spot.

Great issue. I enjoyed reading it from front to back. All great articles!

I just received the newsletter, I have not finished reading it all yet. Great issue!

Joe Bergeson, I too have to really say your article on Bill Radler outlining your interview with him was fantastic reading!!!

I recieved spring and fall newsletter, was there a summer. Neil

Joe,

In your fantastic article you mentioned that the germinating seedlings are apparently covered with plastic shot glasses until they have several leaves.

You know I am really surprised they don’t get real bad fungus that way… any ideas to help me out on this, anyone?

Neil, there was a Summer Newsletter. If you didn’t receive it, please contact Larry Peterson at the e-mail address listed on the first (inside) page of the Newsletter.

Ok, I am a bit slow to respond to the Fall newsletter. The reason for this is the print has faded due to reading and re-reading. Fantsatic alround. The article on Bill Radler was tremendous Joe. Can I ask humbily “where” do I find the the article as noted by the editor “see Winter 2010 RHA Newsletter, p.13” about Bill’s germination technique.

Regards David.

Superb! I also would like to put my 2 cents in regarding a hard copy or digital copy. Actually, I would like to have both and am willing to pay an additional fee for that service. I read info on my pc but it is difficult to study the material with small print and my eyes kind of go buggy after a while…

Thanks, everyone, for your gracious comments.

Don, here is a picture of a pollinated and labeled hip. I didn’t ask him about his method of creating the numbers used to label the parents. The tinfoil appeared to be folded in a way that would protect the hip while allowing air circulation.
