Everblooming Pillar 124

Everblooming Pillar 124 is starting to bloom at Roger Williams Park. This plant was hybridized by the Brownell family, and never released to the public. I think it might have some potential for producing hardy, yellow, climbing roses. The plant is like a yellow version of ‘New Dawn.’ Very hardy in zone 5b. It’s growth pattern is similar to ‘New Dawn.’ If anyone is interested in pollen or budwood let me know, and I will send it to you.

Andy, could you clarify for us what means the comment that this is called Golden Arctic in RW park. I had #84 which I understood was Golden Arctic. Did a lot of breeding with it in the 80s. Is this just a labeling error at the park? I’ll have to dig a lot to find where I purchased mine. It looks to my memory, similar to #124 but tended to have more double, often quartered blooms. Foliage was similar matte, pale texture. Other characteristics match the HMF description of #124. thanks for your suggestions on this.

Im assuming EP 124 is an f2 and/or f3 of Golden Glow, possibly linebred.

Larry,

The rose has been incorrectly identified on maps of Roger Williams Park as ‘Golden Arctic’ for the last ten-twelve years. ‘Golden Arctic’ (Everblooming Pillar 84) has more petals in it, and has a much smaller growth habit. It wasn’t until last year, that Dorrie Nichols (Dr. Walter Dexter Brownell’s granddaughter) confirmed the true identity of the rose.

Thanks Andy, that sounds right. I saw Golden Arctic in RI, maybe Newport or Mystic,CT, in 80s. A big bush, not a climber. Out here it never got to 3 ft with our cold winters at that time.

Thanks again, Andy. It made it onto Dreaming Spires, Playboy, and Jubilee Celebration. These were not my top picks, but this is what the weather is giving me. The former two set seed easily, so I am hoping to retain the genetics – at least that is my primary goal.
