here’s the seedling! It got very tall last year and it’s just starting to leaf out. I didn’t prune it back. As far as cold tolerance, charleston south carolina isn’t the best test, but we got below freezing down to 20F a couple times this year. Looks like it’s going strong! I just wish it would throw out flowers
.
Lol! Yep. That’s pretty much the architecture of my EA that I neglected to prune. As Kim has groused, the great health notwithstanding, Kordes roses frequently have architectural issues akin to those of Austin’s. (I personally don’t mind if it’s healthy, survives our summers, and blooms enough.)
We may have frost tonight here in Central Texas only to see temps shoot back to to 95 this weekend, so that might give some idea of the abuse my plants have to withstand.
Thanks
I see it had a lot of thorns especially down to the base so I assume another parent must be some damask or gallica which would explain once blooming habit. Cause EA has hardly any thorns - at least based on seeing mine. Let’s hope flowers will be very fragrant
On that note here is a close up of the thorns on the seedling followed by the thorns on my earth angel. The seedling has different sized thorns that are more straight, while earth angel has large hooked thorns.
I am including thorns from my baron girod and R. Woodsii since I think they are the likely parents. Baron has the many different sized thorns trait vs the woosii that has dense straighter prickles at the base (my woodsii is mostly thornless). I would also think if the seedling has woodsii in it the stems might be more red.
Baron first then woosii.
It looks healthy! Hope you have a successful season.
Since buds looks quite textured I will assume blooms look more like old garden rose. Curious to see and unfirtunately I have to wait till mid-May.
They are quite resinous as well! The resin smells great and kind of tastes good too. The buds are getting bigger :).
What does it taste of, never thought to eat the secretions of the roses… do moss roses taste nice
An inkling of color… also whenever I’ve tried tasting the mossing on moss roses, ive found them to be tasteless though my sample size is small.
It seems it will be pinkish one rather than ivory color of Earth Angel.
it is very pink. Strong fragrance too, can’t put my nose on the notes exactly but I would say a fruity classic rose fragrance. Fingers crossed that itll be fertile.
That’s a beautiful shade of pink, the shade of Comte de Chambord.
Congratulations it’s beautiful! Keep us posted on the fertility
Went back out again tonight to smell it. It distinctly smells like mashed bananas/banana smoothie. Figuring it out was driving me crazy because it was such a familiar smell.
Any more blooms?
Or since its once bloomer its done for this year?
I grow neither Baron Girod nor R. Woodsii so have nothing to go on, but are there any physical attributes that cause you to believe one of these is a parent, beyond the lack of early flowering? I could see Baron Girod de l’Ain as potentially a daddy, but tend to think of natural outcrossings for the extensively overbred cultivars (self-incompatability is often lost) particularly when so fully double, as being very much the exception.
Kordes, as I understand it, can be slow to demonstrate their potential flower-power, and I am holding out for an eventual remontant plant for you. (Devining any attribute in a complex modern hybrid from purely qualitative observations is an exercise in purely wild speculation as the hidden genotype runs so deep, so… yeah… take my rationalized wishful thinking for whatever it is.)
She’s an attractive thing with nice foliage. Congtatulations!
I have this one! I am in the process of moving to Colorado right now. In order to take the plant with me I cut it back severely for transport. I did spread some pollen on a couple flowers to see if I could get any hip enlargement, but I can’t definitively say whether or not any of my pollinations took. I also took some cuttings to see if I can propagate more plants (though I’ve never been successful propagating from cuttings - if anyone from denver knows how to propagate cutting well and wants to help me, send me a message).
