Dreaming roses

Ive never recollected having a dream about roses, let alone crosses with roses. In this dream, which was quite simple and slightly dumb, I dreamt in my mind that the hybrid that doesn’t make sense to be was obviously from R. spinosissima. Well, Ive never owned or had that rose, nor does it look like it came from such a species. This hybrid is from Yellow Brick Road x controlled mixed pollen. It has large, downy puckered leaves, as if rubiginosa had HT-like leaves.

And, now Im ashamed to admit that Ive officially have been dreaming roses, but its probably because Im under a lot of stress, lol.

This post came to my mind upon waking this AM, just because I had a really ridiculous dream about, now get this, a Rugosa rose!! I had to think about this for a while, like did I just dream that this post existed? and why a Rugosa, about which I have a good friend who makes fun of them. So I checked, and this post does exist and shows lots of guts, just to admit that one can actually dream about roses, while most use the term"dreaming of roses" quite synonymously with “thinking, or daydreaming” and while my dream was not actually about growing roses or roses at all, but rather was symbolic (no doubt inspired by the pathetic backlash to Coke’s advertisement during the superbowl—which will only make this dream sound more ? questionable? ) I understood at that point in time what it was all about and it made a lot of sense, unlike what it would if I actually related this dream to anybody. I like dreams but often do not understand them—and when one is as clear (but leaves me with the impression that all my dreams are ridiculous) and decipherable as this, and a rose had a starring role, I just had to sit up in bed and take notice. My mind has been working overtime. It is time for a vacation, maybe. And I think about roses a little more than the average person on the street.

Jackie, Ralph Moore stated for years he “dreamed in color” and many of his crosses came to him in dreams. He stated he knew “God” provided him with the inspiration for what he did. Not a judgement of his statements or their validity, just passing on his statements and beliefs. Why couldn’t or shouldn’t any of us dream about a rose or roses? We can, and do, dream of just about anything else we think about.

Ralph Moore apparently had much more literal dreams than I do. Which I believe some people have. As well as dreaming in color. If I can relate this with colors that I am ‘dreaming’ about producing crosses for, maybe a nice CocaCola color, a bit more on the ochre side, please hold the ‘aging out to pink’, pretty please. Now, maybe a rugosa in the mix is what is needed?

I don’t know about the Rugosa contribution to the cola color, Jackie. It took quite a bit to obtain a Rugosa in anything other than pink. Often, by the time the pink is sufficiently reduced, there is not much Rugosa character left, or what remains is sufficiently diluted to leave primarily lack of disease resistance. Not that it can’t be done, but you have many layers of once flowering (or non flowering), mildewy and rusty, prickly monsters to wade through to even approach the goal.

Kim,
I do not know much about Rugosas, but threw that in there as a note of cynicism, kind of a 'when pigs fly ’ moment. I do not see myself coming up with a Coke colored rose real soon either. This is all as in a dream sequence. But then there is Rugelda.

Had Rugelda seeds last yr., poor germination, about a doz., and only one had potential but it’s in the ground waiting, and waiting to flower. N-16 had to get that color thru a skipped generation of Rugelda to Robusta.

I’m happy to admit I dream of roses, and the other plants I work with on a regular basis. I’ve have an obsessive mind it often spills over into my dreams. As most people probably know by now, I work predominantly with rugosas, and they always feature in these dreams so neither of your dreams seem particularly strange to me. It’s actually stranger for me to discover that this isn’t normal for rose breeders.

But then I’d always considered dreaming in colour and having control over your dreams to be normal until my wife informed me otherwise. So I probably shouldn’t be surprised.

Your Welcome,

You’ll have fun with those. Good germination and big diversity, so you can pick what suits you. Out of about 25 in the ground 10 still have a significant amount of leaves. The best has small glossy Rugosa type.

Oh, and some thornless.
