Mosy Rugosa hybrids exhibit excessive thorniness. George Will is one exception. It has few thorns and its winter canes turn an attractive reddish color; Normally, rugosa canes become gray as get older. I would like to obtain a plant but there are no North American sources. Can anyone help?
Bill,
I’m surprised to read your description of ‘George Will’ having canes with few thorns and a reddish colour. That is not my experience with this cultivar. In fact, the canes are thorny and I don’t recall anything unusual about their colour. The only source in Canada is Hugh Skinner (Skinner’s Nursery), who will sell bareroot shrubs in the spring or fall. But he does not ship plant materials.
