Abstract: “Content of vitamin C and phenolic substances in fruit of hybrid forms of the rose Rosa rugosa.Biochemical studies were carried out during selection of new R. rugosa forms rich in vitamin C and P and phenolic substances for use in the medicinal and food industry. Local varieties of R. rugosa adapted to the climate of the Latvian SSR, USSR, were used in various crosses for obtaining an assortment of cultivars which were decorative, continuously floriferous and resistant to fungal diseases. The cultivar Abelzieds was obtained by crossing R. rugosa ‘Alba’ .times. ‘Poulsen’s Pink’ and had maternal sterility. By crossing R. rugosa ‘Plena’ with ‘Abelzieds’, 820 hybrid seedlings were obtained. Most FB1 hybrids had maternal sterility and only 12 yielded fruit. From 1973 to 1977 the content of vitamin C and phenolic substances was determined in the fruit of the 12 hybrids of the F1 backcross generation, in R. rugosa Thunb. and in 2 of its cultivars R. rugosa ‘Alba’ and ‘Plena’. The fruit was gathered at the orange-red stage and freed from the internal part containing the seeds and hairs. Vitamin C content in rose hips varied greatly in different years. An inverse correlation was determined between vitamin C content in fruit and the total effective temperatures of the corresponding years. Among the hybrids with a high content of vitamin C 4 forms with early fruit ripening were isolated. These hybrids are presently being propagated for inclusion in preliminary testing for industrial production.”
