Clare Grammerstorf

Update:

I have two Clare Grammerstof x Prairie Peace seedlings that I’m waiting on to bloom. They should be yellow and hardy.

Well done Rob, and yellow to boot.

Thank you David. They haven’t bloomed yet but I’m expecting yellow and very hardy.

Rob when I got to Belgium I was told I sent too many yellows over for release LOL

Warren, can one ever have too many yellows?? LOL

I’m hoping for at least zone 3 hardiness for these two.

For those wondering about using ‘Winter Sun’… for me, in a location where even the black spot gets black spot, it is terrible and completely defoliates… and it has an ugly growth habit to boot. It is fertile and makes enormous seed-filled hips that germinate easily but nothing good has ever come of it for me. I had tried ‘Soul Mate’ (aka ‘Julia Child’) but discarded it due to poor disease resistance where I am, too. I did have success with an OP ‘Baby Love’ seedling but found that it had next to no resistance to downy mildew and when it did crash to black spot it did so spectacularly! I would like to run something like ‘Flower Carpet Yellow’ through ‘Knock Out’, or something similar, because I have found that very good results can be obtained by combining some wich hybrids through the KO and DKO line and am curious as to whether the KO red can be overcome to make yellow… but I have instead been going the ‘Carefree Beauty’ line for the time being as it has excellent fertility and it features several times in the KO pedigree though it has not cooperated yet to produce a yellow seedling for me. I second the suggestion of ‘Gelber Engels’ and I like the look of ‘Yellow Brick Road’, too!

Good to know, Simon. I read that Kordes’ Sunny Sky is considered preferable to Winter Sun by most, per my recollection. Even Kordes’ site gives it the better BS rating.

…Duh. It was actually in this thread that Pierre said as much half a dozen years ago…
