Can somebody diagnose what is ailing this rose? Is it an insect that is eating it? Is that why the leaves are brown?
Hi Julie
Your rose is being eaten by rose sawfly larvae. We have had a lot of problems with it in Alberta, Canada this year.
Agreed, sawfly larvae. I’m not surprised you’re having a greater problem with it this year. They LOVE “green house conditions” so warm, moist like in a greenhouse suits them just fine. From the dead leaves, I think I’d check for spider mites, also.
Thanks. Sawfly larvae, with maybe spider mites too. I was looking online for organic (not harmful to bees, other pollinators, people, pets or wildlife) ways of treating and preventing sawfly. I like the idea of using green lacewing larvae, but not sure if they would work and temperatures could be getting too cold for them in September, I think they need night time temperatures that don’t drop below 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit).
