This year I’ve had a number of first year blooming OP seedlings from Brite Eyes. Most look like mom with some variation in petal count. One is light yellow! Its petals unfurl in a pleasantly symmetrical fashion and retain a hint of yellow. Nice surprise!

Nice! It’s always a relief to have a not-pink!
nice one!
Nice seedling Stephen…I’m impressed with the color phase.
For comparison I’ve included a few photos of Brite Eyes seedlings I got out of a batch of Brite Eyes X Zorina seeds Peter Harris had sent me. The story behind the original cross was published in the last RHA newsletter and there is a possibility that our seedlings are similar in characteristics to Brite Eyes open pollinated. The photos below have better than average flower form.

Would you say that these were typical of your other Brite Eyes seedlings? Did you have problems with any of your seedling flowers not opening fully?

The middle picture most closely resembles the form I’ve seen in 3 of the 4 seedlings from this year. Perhaps mine have had a few more petals, but nothing with the form of your first seedling. Only the light yellow one I photographed has opened with any hint of symmetry as an open bloom. I find Brite Eyes form to be pretty ragged looking, not very attractive to my eye, but I love its health, vigor, and occasionally wonderful fragrance.

Most of the seedling petals were of a toughness I hadn’t observed before. The only seedling I kept was the last one to bloom…photos below.

Will keep it around for awhile yet but I’ve never seen the flower open beyond this stage. Perhaps William Radler has a bit of advice as to whether this is a juvenile or permanent characteristic. This seedling has had issues with what I suspect and refer to as Texan body-bag blackspot.

Nice color and form at that stage.
