Bourbon Roses

In the past fifteen years I have seen at least half a dozen different plants labeled as “Louise Odier”. I don’t doubt there are dozens of generic pinks of this type in commerce, several of which are peddled as Louise. So, beware: the odds are that if you use it in breeding, there is a good chance you are working with one of any number of mystery roses.

And FYI: I have two clones labeled as Louise, and both of them Blackspot tragically. One of Austin’s middle period roses, ‘Mayor of Casterbridge’ was a favorite of mine…at least back in the day when I sprayed for disease. Once I stopped doing that, it dwindled down to a few paltry sticks within three years, and I suspect it has now died completely. Dreadful plant, resistance-wise. There ain’t a Bourbon I’d dare to use in breeding; every one I ever grew got disease like no tomorrow. I suppose if you have the right climate…

Ok, how about Bourbon Queen? Is it as disease-ridden as the others?

I wanted to try some hybrids of La Reine, but unfortunatelly forgot the potted plant in the sun and it dried and died. If someone has op hips of it, I would be pleased to have some. In change I could send some op hips or seeds of Blush Noisette, Guirlande, Maiden’s Blush, Sevillana (Meilland), Rotilia, Burgundy Iceberg, Louise Odier etc.
