Belinda's Dream

The reason I’m using Sunset Celebration and Abe Darby on Jersy Beauty is because they will probably give more yellows than a lot of yellow roses and they are both somewhat healthy for that color.

Patrick

Abraham Darby is a great choice Patrick. I hope you get some seed set.

I have one hip on my BD that is swelling up and it looks like there is one seed sticking part way out of the top of the hip. Not other hips have had any swelling like this one. It would be great if I got a few viable OP seeds from this one.

That is great Rob, I tried several times over several years on Belinda’s Dream just because I had it and loved it and never got anything. But with roses anything is possible, you just never know.

Patrick

Did you try BD’s pollen on a good seed-setter Patrick?

What little pollen I could get, yes. Of course those were my early days at hybridizing. I just think there are so many more roses that are disease resistant now that I won’t use my time on roses that are reluctant. I still keep roses that I can’t hybridize with because I love and appreciate them.

Patrick

I understand how you feel about working with reluctant roses Patrick. I felt the same way myself for a long time. When I learned that people were having some luck with Topaz Jewel and a few other ‘sterile’ roses I decided to give some interesting roses as least a chance before tossing them. BD is one that even if I get nothing from it I will keep it as it is a very pretty rose that is healthy and has a wonderful scent. Thanks for your input Patrick.

Ok, in my post here:

I asked about Belinda’s Dream because it had made pollen for me last year (but not one iota this year…). I would have thrown that on whatever was available (ie Hot Cocoa).

So does this look like a baby Hot Cocoa x Belinda’s Dream?

I’m not really one for doubles and don’t normally try for them. If it is, that would make it a hybrid Wichuraiana. I’ve noticed it has seven leaflets and all my other Hot Cocoa seedlings only have five so far.

Jon, if you got anything out of Belinda’s Dream I’m impressed. I couldn’t get it to take on anything the few times I tried it.

Belinda’s Dream wasn’t all the great here so I didn’t pursue it very long.

Nice seedling, whatever it is.

I know it sounds highly improbable to me also but you have to remember I really was working with very limited stock at the time. I didn’t own all that many roses (and the ones I did own were not that type). In fact both Belinda’s Dream and Hot Cocoa were new to me (both obtained that spring). (I have more than quadrupled the number of roses I own these last two years…and I have broke down and bought doubles and bright colors). I WAS WANTING a seedling from Belinda’s Dream to cross with KO seedlings specifically to impart doubleness. I figured I would be able to recognize it, and if there were any doubts, recreate it. Unfortunately, I don’t think recreating it for verification would be easy.

In fact I can only think of seven “modern” roses I owned at the time.

Flirtatious

Oklahoma

Belinda’s Dream

Hot Cocoa

Graham Thomas

Bella’roma

Carefree Beauty

I was done with Flirtatious (cuz I had seedlings of it and KO). My breeding strategy would have been to cross disease resistant x “modern”. There would have been three exceptions to that. Oklahoma, Bella’roma, and Belinda’s Dream pollen would have been put on anything available. Why that’s important is because KO does me a spring flush and sets nine seeds and only does a very moderate fall flush with nothing in between. Hot Cocoa and a few of the others were the ONLY ones to bloom past spring flush to give me something to work with. That’s why I would call this one

Hot Cocoa x Oklahoma

I love doubles and that looks impressive. And what about it’s disease resistance–that seems to be the even more important thing here. If it highly disease resistant, it really doesn’t matter how many petals it has, but that is lovely.

I would rate it good I guess so far…comparable to Belinda’s Dream, Carefree Beauty, or Flirtatious (which I don’t find them all that great but better than Hot Cocoa anyways)…but not nearly as good as my KO seedlings.

(gratuitous foliage shot…looks just like Hot Cocoa to me)
