Astronomia or The Charlatan

The Charlatan is a very pretty and interesting rose. The flowers look exactly like Dainty Bess to me, but smaller.

Keep that in mind if you use it for hybridizing that is it prone to blackspot. I saw it completely defoliated from blackspot at a local nursery recently.

Can’t really comment on the shrub growth, etc.

Neil, you should visit Heirlooms before the roses quit for the Fall season. They have every shape of a rose imaginable. They have a large Nigel Hawthorn there if ya really wanna see something quirky. They also have a really old, huge Microguso there but its hidden behind trees. Many non-specialists would possibly mistake it for an unusual rhododendron =)

If it is widely blackspot prone then I think First Light would be a wiser choice. It also has the red stamens. I can only assume that it was its single-ness and rather unknown breeder that put this AARS winner to pasture. It won slightly before Knock Out but not much was ever said about it. I find it to be a really nice rose tho. It sets OP hips easily so I can only assume that it would be a decent breeder if paired with something useful (and possibly not single). It has the advantage of the color not being dull or harsh (like Flower Carpet or Knock Out).

Where is Heirlooms located? Sounds interesting.

St Paul, OR. I usually go Hillsboro → Newberg (over the mountain) → hitch a right half-way to St Paul → a few smelly dairy farms and some country corners and youre there. Its beautiful and theyre nice folk. You are even allowed to look at the gardens if the sales cottage is closed as long as theyrre decent hours of the day. They have the elusive Pot of Gold there too so you can see where Singin in the Rain gets its unqiue architecture from.

I’m going to be upset if I leave Heirlooms with another rose.

With another month of growing weather i’m just waiting to see which one of these none climbers hits the three foot mark first.

Bring a digicam, 10 bucks for gas and your drivers license. Problem solved

btw, a word of wisdom – never bring anyone to large garden that isnt plant folk. You will get about 20% in and the whining will commence  Usually only plant folk will want to use their energy to see everything possible. Knowing this will save a lot of headache (and possibly disappointment/anger) in the future.

Found it. Wonderful thing gps with that woman telling you every move to make. As for the other, a bag of romance novels and some chocolates goes a long way.
