Anyone want a plant of R. arkansana?

The title says it all: I have a band sized plant of my R. arkansana to give away to anyone who wants to work with that species. It has proven to be highly fertile and this clone blooms in late May, again in mid-Summer and once more in late September/early October.

Paul

Its been spoken for. However, I can easily dig suckers and root them in the propagation house later if need be.

Paul,

You sent me a sucker of your R. arkansana three years ago and it is a glorious plant. It is in full bloom right now and the fragrance is to die for. It suckers mightily though, sometimes seven or eight feet away from the plant but I just let it roam. It is in a spot that gives it that liberty. Oh, and yes it is very fertile.

Mike

Paul,

Is this plant blooming on new wood? I have a plant of Arkansana that only blooms once (Mid June - Zone 5-6), and on previous year’s growth.

Andy

Andy,

Yes, my plant makes several flushes of new growth through the year and tends to bloom on every new set of growth. It clearly is making new bloom cycles three times in the growing season, on new growth. I’m not sure if this is a climate induced behavior or if its simply what my clone does.

Mike,

Yes, mine has now suckered many feet from the original plant. So be it! The fragrance is lovely. Does your plant rebloom later in the Fall, Mike?

Paul,

My plant behaves exactly like you’ve explained. I do get both the second flush and the third one in the fall. It is blooming on the new growth at those times.

Mike

Paul,

When you say it is highly fertile, do you mean as a seed parent? If so that would be great as most R.arkansana plants are pretty picky as to what pollen they accept.

Where did you get it? I’m just curious as how hardy it might be. Would you have any pollen from this plant? I think I would like to try some. R.arkansana grows wild here but for the most part it is once blooming. Some plants do have a small second flush mid summer. Mowing them (it grows in the road ditches) seems to help bring this about.

Paul

Paul,

I have not attempted to use it as a seed parent, only as a pollen parent, so I can’t comment on female fertility. I’ll try some pollen on it and see what happens. I grew this clone from seed given to me about 11 years ago by Cheryl Netter in Colorado, presumably from a specimen she had collected locally and was growing in her garden. See URL below.

I can get you some pollen in a few days, sure. I also have one sucker potted up in a gallon container that can likely be removed from soil and shipped wrapped in wet newspaper if you want one. I didn’t offer it because I figured nobody would want to pay the expense of shipping a gallon of soil!

I’ve had Arkansana in the garden here and never seen it rebloom. Maybe it needs a wetter area?

Paul,

If you could share a sucker?

A number of years ago, Bob Williams on GW watched Rose Rosette move through the multiflora on a farm in Missouri, but it left the abundant R. arkansana there untouched. At the time I had no RRD locally, but was afraid that his arkansana might be asymptomatic.

Now I’ve got a wall facing west (wind direction) and I’d like to put a more western Arkansana there to see if it catches RRD.

Ann

Paul,

I sent you an e-mail earlier but I don’t know if you recieved it. I will take it the plant and some pollen, but I’m going to be out of town until next Friday. If you can wait to ship them until late next week or the following week that would be great.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

All available plants are now spoken for, sorry. I didn’t get any email from you, no :frowning:

I have saved some pollen for you and will send it late next week.

That’s ok, getting the pollen will be great.

My address is:

7494 Norling Ave SW

Cokato, MN 55321

Thanks,

Paul

Paul G.

I can see if I have any viable suckers if you want one. My plant came from a sucker off of Paul’s plant and behaves the exact same way. I will be out of town until two Sundays from now so your time away won’t be a problem. You can email me and let me know or if you have any questions.

Mike

Ann,

Please email me your mailing address. trospero@gmail.com

Paul

Paul or Mike,

When another plant of this becomes available, can you save it for me or send me some budwood?

Andy

Andy,

I am not home right now and won’t be until next Sunday. I am almost positive I should have several to share if you can wait that long.

I’ll let you know when I get back.

Mike

Mike,

Take your time. I’m in no hurry for it.

Andy
