Hello All, I’ve been away awhile due to life but am trying to get back into roses and hybridizing. I recently obtained two Gigantea species roses from High Country Roses. I live in Zone 7a/6b, so I was thinking of potting them and bringing them indoors in the winter. However, would they be too big to pot? I know they can grow quite large (which is the goal in introducing their genes) but don’t want to risk them being killed by our mercurial winters in East TN. Thoughts?

At least grafted R. gigantea could bloom in an unheated greenhouse, even the potted plant is very small. No problem.

I haven’t taken mine to flowering yet (it was also new this year), but having grown true R. gigantea from other sources in the past (Vintage Gardens), I’m not sure that the High Country material is genuine. So far it looks more like R. brunonii to me. If you have two plants, maybe you could try keeping one outdoors and bring the other one inside, or take some cuttings to root over the winter.
